In the Kimberly there's something that all cowboys look forward to every year...
This is a dangerous sport and not for the faint-hearted, but there are two Cowboys who live for that eight seconds of glory: Colin Fuller and Maxie Holt.
"I rode a rank bull…and I- I reckon I can still ride a rank bull."
Colin is an old hand at rodeo and won many a belt buckle, but to avoid disqualification he must keep one arm free and stay on for eight seconds.
"Eight seconds is going to feel like a fortnight on a bareback horse cos its—"
"you really need the strength and all that sort of stuff and the stamina to keep on going on them—"
"can't quit em"
"you quit em you get a hell of a ride."
For Maxie, it's no guts no glory, and in the bareback (or suicide ride) it's just that much harder to do time, so Maxie must virtually bolt his gloved hand into a leather handle just to stay on.
To be a bull rider you have to ride bulls, and to ride these bulls, you have to half crazy.
"Well I don't know what goes through my mind"
"I'm just there to ride it"
"I'm there to ride the bull."
Maxies pretty good, and at this rodeo in Horse Creek, he walked away with another belt buckle.
But sometimes, somethings gotta give…and this bull broke a little more that Maxie's pride.
"I broke me a left leg… and me wrist, I broke that in Catherine a fair while back"
"and me right arm—well I broke that"
"me shoulder—pushed that out of place"
"and um…yeah I had a few injuries now and then, but this is another—this will be the second broken leg."
"the only cowboy dreams about—that would float and ride—that would look real pretty on, but never happens that way sometimes."
"Uh"
"you get that adrenaline rush, you don't worry about getting scared you know"
"you just want to get out there and have a good time and make it a nine-y eight-y second sort of thing"
"but…yeah."
"Get out there and get rid of it so you get more time and go and drink some booze"
